His CIA portfolio has global reach and operates beyond restraint. His White House Kill Team is a streamlined version of the Vietnam era's Operation Phoenix and the Central American Death Squads. During those imperial "conflicts" the intelligence community established lists of "suspected communists, leftists, and fellow travelers" (to include Roman Catholic priests and nuns, aid workers, unionists, and community organizers) and dispatched Death Squads to eliminate those on the lists, which was done with frightening efficiency. Low estimates of the number of Death Squad assassinations include 200,000 in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, 100,000+ in Guatemala, 100,000 in Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, and another 150,000 in Obama's childhood home of Indonesia, among many other operations throughout Latin America, Africa, and the Pacific Basin.
People who wonder about Obama's "vetting?" Obama has been thoroughly vetted.... early and often by the DIA/ CIA and the vast corporate American "intelligence community." He was recruited throughout his college years at the Columbia School of International Studies, his time working for the CIA cut-out, Business International, and throughout his years in Chicago. Barack Obama, Jr is the Agency's greatest creation.

Only the name has changed, with "terrorists" replacing "communists," and the addition of hundreds of killer robots ("drones") to the Kill Teams of American empire.
Obama and the corporate oligarchy of the Military Industrial Complex are truly coming into their own now, operating openly (although nominally in secret, of course), advertising themselves brazenly on the front pages of the New York Times in order to burnish Obama's election year image as a tough guy.
Obama has advanced the corporatocracy on every front, from extending tax cuts for the super-rich, off-shore drilling and the Keystone pipeline, to his $600 billion Wall Street bail-out, to his protection of the private insurance companies and big pharma.
His posture as America's first minority president and his soaring campaign rhetoric of "Hope and Change" have immunized him from criticism on the left. The man, himself, as President of the United States, is the perfect cut-out, the Corporatocracy's own Manchurian Candidate less

Find a 3rd party that better fits your conscience and vote.
I do -- Whigs finally went away when enough people quit voting for 'em and started voting for someone else.
I won't vote rep or dem in a national election myself -- their political party machines are the problem and not the solution.

That's all well and good, but the system is so gamed that no 3rd (or 4th... or 5th..) party has a snowball's chance in heII. Our population is so dumbed down, propagandized, and castrated by consumerism that the necessary ennui required for fascist rule is already built in.
You can kiss this democratic republic goodbye. Fascism is in full sway, imho. It's all over, including the counting. No liberal appointment to the SCOTUS, or anything else can help us now. It's clearly beyond the tipping point although it is not easy to see how things will go from here.
I find it impossibly hard to be the least bit sanguine at my advanced age.

I think that is exactly why Ron Paul decided to stay within the republican party. His legacy will be a changed republican party in the future. Supporters of Ron Pauls ideas now hold key (pres, vice pres, chairperson) in state GOP organisations in at least 5 states now and the movement, ostensibly about him is starting to be driven by the message and not the messenger.
It will be very interesting to see just what happens at the GOP convention. Ron Paul, for his part says that he does not want to disrupt the proceedings but if the National Committee treat Ron Paul folks with little respect, the convention just might get noisy... If they give Ron Paul his due, we will see a few important planks added to the GOP Platform and a prime time address by Ron Paul..... The GOP is in a transition, now all we need is to find an honest broker in the Democratic party to break up that coalition of the 'I wants' and we might fix the country.... less

I too will vote neither R or D. I'll pick a 3rd Partier or will write someone in.
I know it's a throwaway vote, but I refuse to continue to be part of the problem.
Btw, great topic, Doc.

A throw away vote is a vote for the same old machines and expecting something different.

Targeted assassinations.... kidnappings... extraordinary rendition for torture in secret prisons... indefinite detention.... military tribunals... expanding the war in Afghanistan and extending the occupation to an indefinite future date... military intervention in Libya, Yemen, and Pakistan... continued support for the brutal dictatorships in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.... prosecution of govenment and corporate whistle blowers.... the list of the usual methods of empire goes on and on and on, with Obama fully on board every step of the way.
Does anyone wonder now why Obama's first move as President was to take the prosecution of the Bush torture regime's war criminals off the table? He was always going to consolidate the Bush "gains" for the imperial presidency and firm up centralized control in the White House.
The Obama Justice Department's legal justification of the White House Kill Team makes John Yoo and David Addington look like amateurs. less

Obama is hardly a dictator, or even a wannabe.
He knows he will be eliminated by his corporate handlers if he steps out of line. His chickens will come home to roost, as it were.

"And Romney is any better?"
Romney has been thoroughly vetted by the corporatocracy. He could not have procured the GOP nomination without it.
As president he would hit the ground running. The corporate imperial project would not skip a beat.

"Perhaps, but later on today, he will be singing the praises of Barack Hussein Obama, and what a benevolent leader he has become."
I've washed my hands of the Democrat's Manchurian candidate. A few little bones tossed in my direction on relatively insignificant social issues will not bring me back. As Tony Soprano would say, "He's dead to me."
That does NOT make me a tea partier.

After the Bay of Pigs fiasco (and before the Cuban missile crisis) in 1961 , JFK fired director Allen Dulles, and promised he would "splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces and toss them to the wind."

Kennedy's father was in bed with the mob during prohibition making him a large sum of money that later turned into a fortune on Wall Street after the depression started. Bobby went after them like an ankle biting poodle after his brothers election. You don't bite the hand that feeds you without payback later.

"Kennedy's father was in bed with the mob during prohibition ... blah, blah..."
That's what the mafia chest thumpers like to say, but there is no substance to it. Now that they are in such steep decline it makes them feel more powerful to spout such tales.
The CIA used the mob for their own purposes in harassing Castro's Cuba (including multiple assassination attempts) and in taking out Kennedy.... before he could call off the Cold War and dismantle the agency. The CIA's paw prints are all over the Kennedy assassination.

Both Kennedy assassinations I am inclined to suspect.
BTW:
In his book 'Blind Ambition' White House Counsel to the President John Dean quotes Nixon as saying: "There are two people in this town you don't '@#$%&!' with -- J Edgar Hoover and Dick Helms".
I'm inclined to suspect the White House was completely captured when George Herbert Walker Bush took command.

So true.
But of the two, Helms was much better dressed.... and far more dangerous.

Only Helms' CIA had the motive, the means, and the opportunity to take out the President of the United States in 1963.
The mafia and the FBI played bit parts, along with the Secret Service and the Dallas police.

Hoover, it's true, ruined the lives of many good people and killed more than his fair share.
