Starting tonight, HBO is releasing a 4 part documentary titled "The Weight of the Nation - confronting America's obesity epidemic" to bring more attention to a systemic threat which if left unchecked will, by 2020, impact 75% of America's population. We present the first movie in the series below, and will bring the remaining three parts shortly.

I am still maintaining a proper weight for my age, I do not eat red meat and I have kept up on my colonoscopies.
You all need to do the same.

Who knew?! ZH has printed something relevant to me. The cost of obesity to this country is staggering. And one of the worst things is that we have created and continue to feed this problem through farm subsidies. Our food supply chain is barely safe and it is not remotely healthy. Here in Vegas, we have The Heart Attack grill, and at least one person has left there for the hospital with a real heart attack while eating the "Triple Bypass Burger". Yum.

I love those things if they're anything like the cholesterol pumpin', artery cloggin' Smoky Burger from our local, still operating, former 1954 drive in eatery.
But I must admit, sadly, I've refrained from them for several years.

I think the root is far simpler than the safety of our chain or burger joints that brag they can kill you.
If the average person today ate exactly the same thing a person in 1940 ate, he would be fatter than the 1940 hypothetical equal. For the simple reason that today people are on a caloric surplus due to physical inactivity. Intake is only half of the story. People today play Xbox and World of Warcraft etc. How much calories does that take? And true, they eat more too so they are double screwed.
My wife facebooks and has all sorts of health-nut sites that she has friended. When they post, it goes to her wall and sometimes I stop and read it. Today, funny enough, was a list of cereals by percent sugar by ... wt. Number 1 was Kellog's Honey Smacks at 55.6%.
Well, I was born in 1968 and I ate every cereal on that list. When I joined the Navy in 1990 I was 6% body fat. Basically, I played outside rather than with an Xbox. So there ya go. more

Even the steak you ate in 1940 is not the same steak you eat today. The steak of today will come from a cow that was fed corn instead of grass and that was also pumped full of growth hormones and antibiotics. The chickens of the 1940's could still actually walk. Vegetables were still actually grown by farmers instead of corporate farms. And of course, there was no high fructose corn syrup. Inactivity is a problem with today's kids, but so is the food they eat.

Max,
A double pet peeve of mine on corn.
Most of U. S. corn is used for animal feed, with the consequence you mention.
It is subsidized, but 'only' a few billion dollars annually. Add up all the 'onlys' and pretty soon, well, I think you get the picture.

Max,
I'm not sure the case can be made that food is a culprit. What we know is that the problem is obesity and the variables are our food and our physical activity. Well, genetics, etc, but those are individualistic and we are talking generally.
If people were super active and still were getting fat, then the food variable would be isolated and we could say it's that. I mean, how much of any type of food could one eat if he did nothing all day and expect not to get fat?
Another anecdote: In 2010 I started doing P90X because I felt fat. I was 22% which was right at the edge of normal. Since I'm an older married guy, I didn't need to get all shredded so I did not change my diet at all. After the ... 90 days I was 11%. Half the body fat gone with the exact same diet....actually, more of the same foods. more

Jimbo,
Look at the calories in Corn Syrup, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Dextrose, Maltodextrin, Maltose, Glucose, look at the total calories and the food in your home.
Really need all that sugar and empty calories?

Iouman,
Yeah, it's high. So 17 cokes all day while sitting on a couch would make you fat. But 17 cokes per day and running a marathon you'd be fine.
The discussion is obesity. I not making an arguement for drinking 17 cokes. I'm just saying that won't necessarily make you fat.

P90X like activity, Jimbo, is an extreme example that distorts the argument you are making. That is a very high intensity workout that is specifically designed to create muscle and burn fat. Even when I am playing ice hockey, I am not remotely getting that kind of targeted workout. I was certainly more active as a kid, but I was not doing P90X. We played baseball, we rode bikes and we walked everywhere. I believe kids are less active today, but then again, I see no shortage of kids playing soccer or baseball in the parks today. I see plenty of kids at the rink where I play ice hockey. The food we give kids, especially in school cafeteria's is garbage. It's full of fat, sugar and salt and the soda's in the vending machines aren't any better ... let alone the high energy drinks. less

" I see no shortage of kids playing soccer or baseball in the parks today."
You are correct!
However the percentage of those kids is drastically less than the percentage overall.
In our youth , like 85% did as you describe, now it's like 40% or less, same amount, just fewer kids....

...and on a similar sad note : 1 in 4 of American High School grads can't pass the military entrance exam.
"But even more terrifying is that 75% of 18-24 year old are ineligible for military service because of other reasons such as being physically unfit, are currently incarcerated, have a past criminal record, or simply did not finish high school.
So that leaves the military with 75% of 25% of 18-24 year olds."

A perfect example of what path government has led us down since schooling was the best in the world back in the 60's and when we were not a police state and using the court system as a funnel for money......this country no longer even stands in it's own shadow of what it was but we keep the progressive agenda moving forward.....yeehaaaaaaa!!

Over the years, I have encountered plenty of liberals making claims against the right that they really can't back up with any solid reasoning. Likewise, this claim that liberals have ruined our education system strikes me as a lot of hot air. At the least, I don't hear any explanation that includes a perspective of the changes that have occurred in society in general. This article is a little dated, http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-12-07-childrens-brains_N.htm but it's part of what I'm talking about. Liberals certainly are not without their piece of responsibility, but from too many conservatives, I hear this nebulous and unsupported claim that somehow, a liberal agenda is the cause of all educational failure.

No Child Left Behind ruined our education system for good!
It needs to be abolished
Our children need to be taught how to "reason" not just to memorize so a school district can get money.

You did forget they have to pass the ASVAB test determines the AFQT score which determines whether you're qualified to enlist in the U.S. military.
Similar to the ACT test, can't get a 20 can't get in the military.

Yes, Ms Mansour goes on to say...
"So, who is left to defend us? How can we defend what we hold dear if we are unable to educate those we are supposed to care for? If our youth is too illiterate to operate within the system that we established, do we lower the standards further?
Moreover, how did these children graduate from a high school without being able to do basic functions? How did we fail our children so poorly that basic math and reading are beyond their grasp?
We failed our students for so long that now, after so many years of incompetence, those who would defend us, cannot because they are unable to read."
-----------------
Back in '66 most all of us were required ... to at least get tested and take the physical. Most everybody passed; it was a foregone conclusion. Navy and Air Force required HS Diploma and higher scores than Army as I remember. less

Max.....the inception of the Dept of Education grounded with liberal tolerance and social policy has proven over 50-60 yrs that we are now just DUMB in comparison to other developed countries....one can pull on the apron strings all they want in arguing how tons of money and liberal policies have given kids a better chance and each passing day proves how educational administrators are filfthy rich and kids are dumb.....sorry my friend.....although both sides of the aisle absolutely share blame and both parties need to be eliminated from practicing politics, the progressive play book has kids so dumb now on matters of intellect and responsibility to compete with other nations that all these next generations will do with degrees is serve ... food......these kids may be XBox or whatever genius.....but they are checkbook dumb as dirt and dozens of other developed nations thank us for their new found riches. more

Daddio, the city sponsors bicycling events manned by volunteers and bankrolled by city coffers and private contributions. They're sponsoring laid back sports leagues like dodge ball, all in an effort to get people off the couch and get their hearts pumping baby.
Any thinking man has gotta conclude; if tax money was put to use promoting activity and healthy lifestyles, the need for ObamaCare or RomneyCare would take a nosedive pal!

Anybody who has tried to use their grandmother's cookbook knows the regular diet from the 40's also had it's problems. They used a lot of butter, salt and sugar for one and fried many items we now prepare in a more healthy way. Dieting or watching your diet was pretty much a non-topic.
My grandmother was a fabulous cook and much came from her kitchen garden and her orchards. But there was copious amounts of ingredients we now know should be used sparingly.

Far sooner than '65, TD. :)
I went to Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS, July '62. McD just outside the tarmac gate and I recall the billboard "Over 1 million sold". Had never heard of Mickey in California, 1962.

How bout as a start ric, we stop pumping billions of dollars every year into farm subsidies? Maybe if meat wasn't so cheap and maybe if corn syrup wasn't in nearly every item you buy today, maybe then we would have such high rates of heart disease and obesity. We could save a lot of money on both sides of the equation.

We are what we eat.
Fried foods? Processed foods.
Corn based produces, the best empty calorie food.
Corn syrup.
Our food is far from healthy. Some people have a disposition for being overweight, we are our own worst enemy along with our food supply.

Honestly I wasn't a fat kid I was scrony as they would say. I ate chicken skin from fried or baked chicken, ate pork chops with the fat on, bacon, red meat with fat. chips, candy, pop.
I still eat red meat, pork, chicken(however we are trying to stay away from the pumped with anibiotics and growth hormons on the chicken due to how it messes with the wifes health), fried foods.
Heck in HS my diet consisted of peperoni pizza, monsterburgers from hardie's before they went thickburger, coke(actually I'm addicted and have to have 3 cans or bottles a day or I get really irritable and headaches).
And actually you need red meat in your diet for Iron, and for women that can make a big difference in their time of ... the month. Why pop pills for vitamins when you can eat good for to get them.
I can say yes I have gained weight from years of a desk job, limited activity, gaming, sitting infront of a computer for 10+hrs a day, watching TV. less

Honestly I do not think food was any healthier 50-100 years ago, they were cooking with lard and drinking not only whole milk but pure cream. There was a soda fountain at every drug store, and burger and fries was the American eat-out staple.
Blaming what types of food that are available is just a scapegoat, the problem is people don't know when to stop shoveling the food into their face. Actually they do know when, they just refuse to, money is no longer an object when it comes to food because its so cheap relative to what we have to spend. Obesity is an unintended consequence of prosperity, enabled by sloth, gluttony and lack of responsibility for ones well being.
