Fire the fool...
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta declared global warming a national security threat yesterday during a speech before an environmentalist group in Washington, D.C.
The area of climate change has a dramatic impact on national security, Panetta told the Environmental Defense Fund last night. Rising sea levels, severe droughts, the melting of the polar caps, the more frequent and devastating natural disasters all raise demand for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
However...
The United Nations climate change panel "admitted that the melting Himalayas prediction was not based on science but on a 1999 media interview given by one scientist," Charen observed. "They said they regretted ... more

LOL and what does the regional Glacier melting and adding on to have to do with scientific fact of human forced Global warming..... not a thing....no regional weather patter is going to change the fact that CO2 is a green house gas, and that human activity is raising the percentage of CO2 in the amosphere, and turning our oceans acidic, at a faster rate of change then seen in nature. This warming will lead to flooding, and droughts and melting polar ice caps. The planet wil survive this just fine, but human beings, due to their proclivity to "own" land, and set up economic systems that depend on long established weather patterns , will find it very hard to cope.

The security threat due to melting ice above the Arctic circle is real and current. Russia is sending ships into the Northwest Passage to claim territory for strategic placement of outposts. The Canadians are dithering and stewing since much of that territory is theirs. The passages which haven't been navigable for a century are now open and will allow Russia the much coveted route to the North Atlantic. We would be very foolish to downplay this imminent threat.

I'm not sure what you mean by your reply. Global warming is not a security threat, that is either a misquote or a misinterpretation. The threat is the melting of the Arctic ice which opens new passages for possibly hostile nations to gain access to our territory. Whether it is due to human induced global warming or natural causes doesn't matter. It is occurring and must be addressed. Politicizing acts of nature is foolish and dangerous.

The Northwest Passage isn't "now open", but rather has been open since the Cold War...to submarines. How is the presence of surface ships a greater threat in the nuclear age?

It is interesting to examine Exxon's, who is esstentially a sovereign state with its own geopolitical policies that sometimes aline with the USA and often times don't, changing policy regarding climate change. Inititally they pored money into funding groups to provide on going controversy regarding climate change caused by industrial CO2 .In my opinion, their goal was not one of deception but a delaying policy. Then beginning in 2006, they changed policy, withdrew funding, recognized the effects of industrial CO2 emmissions and began supporting a carbon tax. Not cap and trade but a carbon tax. I agree that if the decision is made to do something that a tax would be the most efficient means of accomplishing the goal.

I'm not sure about the Tax idea.
Utilities are a local monopoly. They could just pass the tax to their customers.

Do you know WHY he declared it a National Security Threat?
I do!
IT gives the Government complete authority over any business that contributes to global warming.
It's the FIRST step to establishing a Fascist society.
The first obvious targets would be Coal plants, the petroleum industry.
Next would be transportation of goods, trucking, railroads, airlines.
Then would come less obvious things, like the internet with it's huge power consumption, heat generation, or even chemicals to make computer chips and hard drives.

They've never made the power grab before like they are now.
Forcing GM bond holders to give up their rights,
Forcing banks to give concessions to mortgage holders
Forcing Coal plants to shutdown
Forcing health care companies to pay penalties if they don't meet demands of the Government
Forcing charities to provide services against their charter
Forcing public swimming pools to close because they can't meet ADA requirements.
Forcing farms to close because of mundane regulations.

Before the progressive left started a full on assault on individual and states rights by concluding that the constitution is a complete open ended document of no relevance what so ever therefore giving the federal government power over anything and everything it chooses.... One has to wonder why they even bothered to write it in the first place... some formality is suppose.
This comment by Panetta ties in nicely with NDAA and a recent Executive order: National Defense Resources Preparedness

If you will remember the rallying cry of the Boston Tea party was not "No Government" it was "No taxation with out representation".... that is what our constitution was about....Representative Government... and due process of law.....it set up some basic limitations of property and personal rights, but that was in no way intended as the right wing keeps trying to say, to override the welfare of society as a whole. It was only intended to create a boundary so that the majority could not force their mob morality of what ever time period on the minority of one.........and The federal Representative Government was designed to enforce that boundary. -Interesting that you would confuse the "power" of the individual with the freedom of the individual. Out of curiosity, why so determined to relieve the individual of his or her freedom?
Additionally,right-wingers never "loose site" and only rarely lose sight of the importance of individual liberty to the freedom of society as a whole. LOL its only interesting that you interpret it that way.... What is of concern to rational same people is the power wealthy individuals or small groupes wield over much less wealthy individuals that buy direct access to our representative Government. Whats interesting is that the right wing glosses over that sort of abuse of our individual liberty, and even demeans the way the average Amerian has to adress that sort of abuse, through legal and legislative tool that is our representative Government.

"totalitarianism has nothing to do with Representative Government"
-Ahhh, but it does. When Government inserts itself forcibly into the marketplace, it attracts those businesses seeking a regulatory advantage over their competitors. The very instances of corporate influence you argue against are the result of lobbyists pursuing the favor of regulators. Now how do you propose eliminating a free-market invasion of representative government; apart from deregulation? Remove the impetus for business to curry favor with politicians, and watch the money bleed out of DC.

Our Constitution is meant to allow for that reality of the human condition. The Federal Government is the single organizing principle and framework, under which these "United States of America" are supposed to function. State Rights do not and will never trump that Single Organizing principle, and individual wants and desires (the right to the pursuit of happiness) are never suppose to destroy the stability of the social fabric, upon which the ability to pursue ones individual desires is required. Personal Freedom in a civilization comes from living in a stable society that has a strong rule of law, that applies equally to everyone. Because the FED has a real reason for its existence, just like our Government does, the right wing insecent calling for and end to them is, so much wizzing in the ocean...all it does is create further apathy, cycicism and disconnect, in regards to the real problem of corruption.
